Cargo HD Got Me Into Makeup Again And Other Stuff

A while back now, I was invited to Cargo HD’s pre-summer launch (now available at Beauty Bar) of their “swimmables” range…and I know right, my last post on here was like “me coming out of a slump” char…and then now almost a year later, hello.  Too much has happened, seriously, apart from Dad passing away suddenly last November, which was awful of course.  Maybe to some extent I’ll vlog about it one of these days, just maybe.  That makes much more sense.

Cargo loot inspired confidence in me to still keep up appearances amidst a time where the last thing I felt like doing was fixing my face.  I even brought some of my Cargo cosmetics loot to Divehouse in Antique with me where I did my scuba-diving intro last April.  This was much to the amusement of divemaster friends who warmly mocked me for being so girly, haha.  Who tests water-resistant blush underwater and wears waterproof mascara inside her dive mask?   Apparently me.  We were here 3 years ago as well with my Dad (a once upon a time national PADI director) who had the grandest time beneath the surface always.

Their “swimmable” blush tins are sweat and water resistant powder blush formulas that are very impressive.  Kate Winslet’s makeup artist Lisa Eldridge applies the “Bali” one here in this video.  Cargo products at the get-go are well thought out, have highly satisfying color pay-off and are finely manufactured.  The company was founded originally out of Toronto, Ontario in Canada.  Their past Blu-ray pressed powder range well over 5 years ago was the only powder that, according to KC Concepcion, was fine enough to not show up so much on-camera in telenovela tapings.

My weakness though primarily is Cargo’s Picture Perfect Illuminating Palette, pretty much like the ambient lighting trio by Hourglass but reasonably priced and I prefer the packaging.

Because of this one by Cargo I don’t yearn for the Hourglass ambient lighting range anymore.  I like it so much I’ve already hit pan on it after just a couple of months.  The illuminating palette by Cargo provides a very subtle sophisticated glow and highlight.

I was excited to be able to use this highlighter trio on myself and one of my dearest clients (and former schoolmate), Marga Valdes-Trinidad, sister of artisan jewelry designer Bea Valdes and wife of actor TJ Trinidad.  I did Marga’s makeup for an out-of-town wedding and used quite a bit of Cargo’s swimmable blush in “Los Cabos” which would be similar to NARS Orgasm but less red and sparkly.  I also used the Illuminating palette powder sparingly on her being careful avoid the eye area.

Since I know some of you are going to ask what’s on Marga’s lips I’ll spill.  They’re just defined with a Deborah lipliner in #2 (from SM Beauty) and slicked over with this fabulous booster balm by Make Up For Ever.  I actually used the booster on the surface to prep for a red lip that didn’t happen.  She liked the tint so much on her lips that she stuck with it and cancelled going red.  Simplicity.  This also comes in a clear, non-tinted version.

So the couple sent me another photo after they arrived at the venue (above).  Marga doesn’t really do selfies she says so I took her photo above and then TJ took the second shot at the venue.  She specifically wanted her makeup light, noticeable, long-wearing and fresh and she brought along her own lipstick for retouching.

For Cargo’s bases I’ve been smitten by two, but will feature the second in a separate post.  First is the one I was using for pretty much all of summer even while at Antique, their Picture Perfect CC cream which has the coverage of Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer but with a less sticky finish… #perfect.

It comes in light and medium tints and applies as a white cream that adjusts in shading upon contact with skin.  Click through my IG slideshow below to see how that happens :).  It’s available for Php1750 through Beauty Bar.

For next time I’ll be talking ’bout my current foundation routine using this Cargo foundation.  The Cargo PH team specifically pointed out note how much more travel friendly all the packaging is.

I apply Cargo’s Picture Perfect HD foundation in thin micro layers in tandem with MAC Fix Spray and a beauty blender and sometimes Pia Wurtzbach’s favorite MAC prepping toner before all that.  More details to come in the next post in 2018!  Kidding.

MY STEPS UP FROM THAT SANDTRAP SLUMP

This is probably by far the most honest blog post I might be putting out so far but I’m happy to be back on my keys again.  It did just occur to me, why do I have wait to be in a completely better place before actually getting back to you guys?  I’ve finally managed to scribble this reminder onto my brain — I don’t need to become better before having something valuable to say.  Not everything in my life needs to be picture perfect for me to share what’s close to my heart with you.  Besides, my experience of deciding to kick the bucket and get up and make an opportunity for myself may or may not help some of you out there.  God’s grace and blessings have been revealed in the most unexpected ways for me…however He just might be waiting for you to take the first step and get up.

The FOMO (Fear-Of-Missing-Out) during my freelancer blues while looking left and right at every other freelancer or influencer was paralyzing me and actually making me miss out and get stuck.  My mistake was I looked beyond MY lane.  Suddenly everyone was posing and posting non-stop about anything and everything and where they were at.  I had never hit a WALL like this and it was new to me.   Read on for the full post and see the steps I took to reach higher ground.

SOME MID-YEAR MAKEUP FAVES 2016

Thought I’d come back with a quick one for you, and though I’d very much love for it to be a video there’s quite a bit of stuff I am still attending to in the real world at the moment.  For economic reasons I’m having to explore career tangents, not giving up on the makeup dream…just attempting to make it more feasible for the moment with other opportunities and I do admit I love writing and creating content.  I have been loving quite a lot of makeup again recently so I thought I’d show you.  Some of these I’ve already mentioned in the past, will just randomly point out the newer bits that have piqued my interest.

midyear2016_01

  • VMV Hypoallergenics Dye-free Skin bloom blush “Heat” Php1550 w/ case (if you like Bare Minerals “Warmth” in the loose powder form, this is a conveniently pressed dupe).  I gave one as a birthday gift to Tricia Centenera V. and she liked it, too.
  • Laura Mercier Infusion de Rose Nourishing Lip Balm – I used this when doing makeup for Alodia Gosiengfiao recently, I put it on at the start and midway she immediately asked “What’s the one you put on my lips awhile ago?  It really works, my lips felt better agad.”  Then we hunted for it for like 15 mins because as you know the products you usually want to show even if you just used them tend to hide out of shyness.
  • Pixi Lash Booster Waterproof Mascara in Blackest BlackThis one was quite a surprise…I usually don’t expect a mascara to really decently hold a curl unless it’s a waterproof drugstore brand.  It’s unique if a high-street beauty brand does a mid-range mascara that performs SUPER well.  I love this, it’s not clumpy or crispy, it’s super black with a significant length and volume boost, plus holds a curl.  This Pixi one is my favorite daily mascara now.  It’s super easy to art direct my lashes with it.  It’s very waterproof but not as waterproof I think as the Browhaus HD mascara which I love for BOOMing big lashes.  (Note: The Browhaus HD one actually made Alodia G. go “whoa, it’s like you put false lashes on me, what’s that?” at a shoot.  Her lashes are long but Browhaus HD mascara is excessively good for curl and volume).
  • Maybelline’s HyperSharp Pen Liner – This supposedly (if my source is correct) is the liquid Maybelline pen liner that went viral on Facebook when a random girl who just broke up with her boyfriend went all “glass-half-full” on us and shared that her eyeliner was still on after hours of weeping.  Bless her heart. #WeepForIt, I’ve actually tried it and used it on clients and it’s certainly one of the best liquid liners Maybelline has put out there.  It’s deeply black, not flaky, and stays on.  Note though for newbies, it’s difficult to remove and not “mistake” friendly (it has a staining tendency, unless you’ve got an oil-based / bi-phase makeup remover and a cotton bud handy, if you do, you’re good.
  • Benefit Cosmetics HOOLA Bronzer – This is a classic, ever since I saw Lisa Eldridge’s Behind The Scenes video on her bronzer editorial shoot here…I’ve always wanted to try Hoola on my eyelids.  It does work magic on medium fair to very light skin tones.
  • Color Pro Triangle Eye Brow Pencil in Dark Brown (sword tip type with a spoolie on the end) – This Korean product comes in a range of colors and my cousin KC actually gave me two of these because she thought they were her shade, but they turned out to be more like MAC lingering, not warm enough for her.  They’re great because I like how pigmented the pencil is but just long-wearing enough.  I think Asian pharmacy places that carry beauty like Bonjour or Sasa have this.
  • VMV glitz lipsticks in “My Girl” (similar to Kylie’s Metal lipstick in “Heir” but not as pink) and “Jane” (a sheer, nude bronze tinged dupe for a Shu Uemura lipstick I used up before).  Here I am wearing “Jane” below, which is partly inspired for me by the TV series I recently enjoyed “Stranger Things”…you’ll only get what I mean if you watch it.

I honestly believe that I will never stop enjoying my so far small yet significant role in today’s beauty industry.  I found recent proof after spring cleaning recently that all this while, God knew my heart’s desire.

As a kid I couldn’t explain why every time we went out to do the groceries I was overcome with excitement every time I got a chance to pick out new things from the personal care section.  I’d get so excited every time I finished a new bottle of shampoo or a bar of soap, or if there was a new Cream Silk conditioner out (or so I thought because they were always revamping their packaging).  Into my teen years facial wash came in and so did more skincare and I was always driven to check the new stuff out.  I wondered why a lot of my friends knew what they wanted to be when we were young and I didn’t.  It turns out it’s because the roles they wanted existed already at the time and my niche had yet to come about.  God knew even all the way back to when you didn’t.  I don’t have one label for what I am just yet, but I know I’ll be in beauty and content creation for quite awhile, especially if passion runs this deep.

THE WORD “PERFECT”

In the last couple of months I’ve been working and doing makeup work in the offline world to make ends meet.  I almost said “real” world but I’d be quite wrong in saying the blogging world isn’t any more real than a dutiful desk job we can all be thankful for.  I was coasting through and snagging threads of what I was trying to weave into a prosperous adult life but there were just some things left hanging in the balance that needed my attention.  We had to clean out the thought attic.  There’s this word most humans fear, the word “PERFECT”.  I think deep inside many of us can’t stand it for real.  Nobody really likes being reminded of something they’re not.  I think we needn’t fear it though because I recently remembered that “perfect” is also an action word and not just a descriptive word.

PERFECT_01

PERFECT_02

To “perfect” is to work at and finish or make something as close to being complete as possible and to be “perfect” is to be finished completely.  I never managed to put up a post for Spectrum bazaar because I felt back then that the event, while pretty, didn’t particularly strike a unique chord in me that day.  I never delete pictures if I can help it just in case they can support something I want to say.  One of the key words and phrases among the varied definitions of the word “perfect” are “complete” and “lacking nothing”.  I’ve had my heartstrings pulled this month by the word “perfect” and also felt my Spirit telling me to no longer be afraid of this word.  I just need to embrace what it means and the verse above that helps me in this does not contain the word “perfect” itself but bears its essence “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13  We are only able to attain perfection with the guidance of the One Who lacks nothing.

May whatever you choose to perfect today bring you pure joy.

DROPPING A LINE WITH PIZZA AND I’M FINE

Hello, all of you, I know it’s been like two weeks.  In a very gradual, slightly reluctant way I decided to take a break from blogging not because something happened or anything like that but because real life concerns were at hand.  I just had to take a break from all of it and get me pretty bum back on some work.  On this end, all the online media was just overtaking my brain, pressure to keep up with all this “influencing” and even some “insincerely influential” stuff was rising in a not so healthy way inside me.  It was affecting how I planned to produce posts, and take photos…some of you who blog know this feeling.  Today everyone wants something from talking about something or showing off something.  That’s real life and you need to ride the wave to stay in this.  It wasn’t like that for me when I began this blog before so I just managed to paddle back up to the surface for a quick breath.  Blogging burnout is a bummer, but I just needed to take a lengthy refresh…and perhaps have some pizza from Caruso on hand-painted Italian crockery.

There was also a highly unpleasant situation where due to unfortunate circumstances we didn’t have power in our rented apartment for two weeks.  Lately, I have been living though without wondering what products I just needed to slap on my face because of some important things that needed my attention…and while it was completely important to get back to loving all that good stuff  it was beginning to feel redundant.  I just hit the reset button for all of it to feel new again.  So here, peace and pizza to you and yes, you still got me!  The blog’s here to stay.

L’OREAL LA PALETTE NUDE 1ST IMPRESSIONS VIDEO

L’Oreal’s La Palette Nude has made its way here!  The sophisticated set of ten wearable eyeshadow shades enters the local market for Php800 (corrected price, sorry in the video it says Php600, I referred to L’Oreal PH’s FB page, must have been promo price) and I’m actually pretty pleased with how much more portable in size it turned out to be when I finally laid eyes on it.  The quality of the eyeshadows in L’Oreal’s La Palette Nude set actually impress me more than those in Urban Decay’s first Naked palette to be honest…which is the reason why I couldn’t convince myself to buy one of those.  I did like this one enough to talk about it on video, though!

Today I’m sharing a simple first impressions video on this palette together with a very basic tutorial with somewhat of an unplanned surprise visit in the video from a good friend.  More photos and the video here after the jump.  Keep reading.

BARE BUT THERE MAKEUP BITS

We’re sliding back into beauty with a whisper of makeup over the face, and I mean like the barest veil.  It’s not supposed to look like I have no makeup but more like the least amount possible to make it just noticeable enough.  I’d say it’s somewhat Glossier-ish in terms of the effortless approach to makeup.  More often than not I prefer my makeup looking like I didn’t try too hard depending on the occasion.  In this look I skipped liquid foundation.

barebutThere_01

Bobbi Brown Longwear Cream eyeshadow “Sand Dune”, VMV Velvet matte lipstick in “Fireclay”, Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzing Powder in “Antigua” used as blush, Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer (my shade is Medium, shown here is Neutralizer…too light for me by 1 shade), Eye of Horus Husk Dual Brow Perfect (pencil and brow gel), Maybelline Full N’ Soft Waterproof Mascara, NYX Illuminator powder in “Ritualistic”.

Before I left the house and applied makeup in the cafe where I’m at right now I applied a couple of dabs of Pixi’s Rose Oil Blend onto my face earlier this morning to give it a bit of a luminous lift.  This was today’s “bare but there” makeup menu.  Read on to see how it turned out and how I did it!

BLOG SALE AND A “ME BEFORE YOU”-ish TOPSHOP SWEATER

Just wanted to quickly announce that my spring cleaning blog sale is up here at the second tab  on the upper left corner of the site (after About Julia)  and this sale consists of ten tops I haven’t been using in awhile but are still eye candy and in good condition…INCLUDING what I believe to be the main event of this sale: a TOPSHOP real knit wool sweater that I spotted and very likely being worn by Emilia Clarke in the Me Before You upcoming film trailer.  This particular piece I’m convinced is the main event of my blog sale.  If you’re one who travels abroad a lot this is for you, sadly we don’t have whether chilly enough locally for me to use it more often.

I’m like 99.9% sure it’s the same sweater, given that Me Before You is pretty much a British film with British actors and Topshop being a UK brand.  Obviously there is film grading in most movies, so I didn’t spot it right away, only when I applied a cooling filter (to match the grading in the film) to the warmer photo of the texture of my sweater (which killed all the orange dots) did I realize that it most likely is what it is.  If it isn’t that exact sweater  it’s twinning quite closely to be sure.  To buy this sweater or the other items I have for sale go here for the links to ebay or to the tab after About Julia.

FROM EYES TO LIPS, ANOTHER WAY TO THE NUDE POUT

In makeup some aren’t as aware that we’re not restricted to use one product for just one purpose.  BAFTA Award winning makeup artist, Morag Ross (Carol, Sense and Sensibility, Elizabeth the Golden Age, Lost in Translation) in a recent sublimely lengthy interview with Guardian Beauty Editor Sali Hughes on YouTube, divulged that on herself for natural enhancement she wields a MAC Lingering eyebrow pencil to define the outer part of her lips.  The Pixiwoo sisters, Sam and Nic, in the past have used MAC Stone lipliner which is a tawny ashy hue, a pop fave for overdrawing nude lips in subtle fashion.  The FS Kohl Eye Pencil below in Caramel (Available at SM) is actually also the brand’s brow pencil…it’s a unique midway texture that’s just soft enough to function as an eyeliner but not in any way too soft or smudgy to do brows.

Processed with VSCO with a4 preset

I have done this in the past, using brow products to define lips instinctively (not realizing that pros like Morag actually did it ) in an instance where I left lipliner behind and decided to go for a nude lip.  Today I’ve decided to show that the result it isn’t strange at all, as you might think…I even threw in a cream eyeshadow, my favorite Bobbi Brown matte one (Sand Dune), to use as a lipstick.  Read on to see the result.
