Grazing on Green Kitchen Stories

To blog about another set of bloggers, the act is usually carried out when you’re truly inspired.  First thing’s first, let’s put it plain.  I love Instagram, along with millions of you out there.  I won’t say I’m addicted but that I have a healthy connection with the enabling app.  Other than my love for photography it was through Instagram that I connected with my makeup artist role model, UK Celebrity pro Lisa Eldridge, who liked and commented on two of my blogged makeup looks, and then I suddenly placed in one of her online contests a couple of weeks later and my face actually appeared on her website.  A couple of months after she sent me beauty prizes.  Now that I recall all that, it is still quite surreal for me…it’s amazing how a mobile app opened that window.  Instagram hosts a multitude of eye-catching personal portals to this wide, wide world of amazing people.  While engaged in beauty I also follow lots of other inspiring individuals who like to present good food.  One of the best presented online IG accounts I ever chose to follow was Green Kitchen Stories (@gkstories), behind the handle is Stockholm based couple David Frenkiel and Luise Vindahl.  There are a lot of food-inspired IG accounts but I do believe it’s mainly because of them that so many are presenting the healthy meals on their table from a bird’s eye view.  I’m so glad we have our own copy of this now.

I wasn’t aware that team @gkstories were already famous when I followed them early last year.  Online popularity bloomed for them between 2011 and 2012 when they started a cooking blog focused mainly on creating easy vegetarian dishes ( vegetarian = veggies, seeds, fruits + dairy and eggs sometimes).  In 2013, they published their first book The Green Kitchen.  Because of their creative food success, they’ve gotten to travel a lot, I think they were recently in Australia.  I haven’t kitchen tested this book yet, but it’s the first cookbook I read from the start all the way to the dessert tail right after we got it at Fully Booked, probably because of all those beautiful photos, short processes and simple words.  The only challenging aspect is a couple of the ingredients they source (looks like I might be beaching myself at Healthy Options, the weekend markets, and/or Santi’s).  I can’t wait to try the recipes this coming week.  The book contains a list of the pantry ingredients they use on a regular basis, a collection of basic methods, recipes for breakfast, light meals, entrees, to-go picks, desserts, and drinks.  It is also full of breathtaking photos and that for me is the fresh cherry on top.  This one isn’t in the book but is a recent one from their site.

This book would be wonderful for making lots of fresh food and drinks in the summertime.  Lots of you know that I also love to cook and bake occasionally so I’m hoping to kinda cook my way somewhat through their book, but not everything perhaps due to availability of ingredients.  I don’t do it everyday (I should) though I believe I just might have a knack for it (‘coz some people attack my food ’til it’s gone) and I will admit I’m not afraid to try complicated dishes.  I also have an appreciation for simple healthy preparations you can toss together with hands.  I think a notch up versus my appreciation for Instagram is my love for the edible plant world: herbs, fruits, fungi, legumes, and vegetables.  I’m not vegetarian but I love eating them, making salads, and cooking with them.  When it comes to cooking there are tons of food blogs out there but there are a handful of gems with great culinary quality like GK Stories.  A few years ago and up ’til now I still like Jennifer’s Tiny Urban Kitchen blog for the Asian side of food prep and appreciation.  Jennifer’s also brilliant because she’s sort of like a former chemist turned food fanatic (featured by CNN Eatocracy awhile back).  She also loves to include creative culinary ventures using characters like Totoro in her food.

Movie Minute | Still Alice trailer stokes gratitude…

I’ve been sleeping a lot, recuperating a lot since Christmas passed.  I haven’t allowed my consciousness to slip away like this in years come to think of it.  I’ve never been fond of naps.  I always thought naps were a waste of time and daylight, that is ’til I realized naps provide a comforting albeit temporary escape from a constantly haphazard world.  So slowly I am picking up the pieces before 2015 rolls in and have been screening film trailers online for the sake of it, something I used to do a lot but put away for awhile.  This isn’t a movie review because I haven’t seen this movie yet.  According to a very particular writer friend Still Alice is excellent and for being in a drama genre he claims it’s done tastefully and that acting isn’t overtly melodramatic (he mentioned “no slapping….”).  It is based on the book by NY Times bestselling author Lisa Genova.  The trailer moved me so much I just had to say something about it before we try to watch later on.  It made me realize there is just so much to be thankful for.  After getting that preview I went down to hug my mother.

“I’m not suffering, I’m struggling…”

Another good friend said the book was great, too.  The film’s lead cast includes the incomparable Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart, and Kate Bosworth all given roles that seem to fit like gloves.  At least that’s what I can pick up from the trailer alone.  Very simply put it’s a movie about an intelligent woman with the onset symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, the feared degenerative illness where you slowly and literally lose your mind.  It supposedly isn’t a light movie, but I don’t mind heavy screen plots as long as what is meaningful is placed at the heart of the story.  I guess I was also looking to be stoked for gratefulness, something that’s really important to me towards the end of the year.  Looking forward to watching this one, it comes highly recommended so I’m told, here’s the trailer.

Yummy Calchews Chocolate | Chewable Calcium Bites

This isn’t your usual beauty post, but I’ve really been taking these!  Calchews are chewable calcium supplements but I do want to mention them after they were sent to me.  I find myself chewing them randomly in the car or in places where I shouldn’t be falling asleep, once a day.  What helps me want to take them is they come in yummy flavors of Caramel or Chocolate.  I like Chocolate because it tastes like an easier to chew version of my childhood favorite, Tootsie Roll candy, it really, really does.

“CalChews is the only calcium supplement in the market that is enriched not only with Vitamin D3 but also with Vitamin K – vitamins essential for optimum bone health.  Calcium is one of the most important minerals that our body needs. It is essential to maintain strong bones and healthy lifestyles. It has also been found to contribute to weight management, strong teeth, and helps with PMS and mood swings.  Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K both provide the perfect combination for a more superior Calcium Supplement. Vitamin D3 is essential for proper calcium absorption that helps prevent bone diseases such as osteomalacia and osteoporosis.  Vitamin K ensures that the full benefit of calcium is directed to where our body need it most – our bones. Vitamin K is the vitamin that binds Calcium to our bones.”  (NOTE: Not sugarfree, not suitable for those with diabetes.  Contains Vitamin K, consult your Doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking blood thinning medication.) Size/ Price: CalChews Chocolate 15s / Php 180.00,

Oracare Mouthwash “Merrymint” | No Sting, No Red lips

We’re talking about what we get to talk with, our mouths.  I’m proud to report that I am a cavity-free person.  I’ve never had a single cavity nor had a major bad breath problem except for when I was sick and acidic, or sleepless and acidic, or naturally if I had satisfyingly drooled on my pillow (or your shoulder) after an exhausting day.  Oh by the way please…*clenches fists and bows head* PLEASE…everyone look at the blackboard, when we’re referring to “breath” as a noun there’s no “e” at the end of the word.  Breathe is the verb “We breathe air in order to live.” which does have an “e” at the end.  Again, breath is the noun “She gave her last breath and died (and so did everyone else in the room because she didn’t use Oracare).”  That’s it, thanks, just spotted both words being misused often especially on Facebook so had to clear that up.  Okay, now back to the subject of one’s oral hygiene, I actually didn’t have any problem with previous mouthwashes that stung to be honest, I was okay with the strong sensation.  What I didn’t like was how red my lips would get after rinsing with the standard issue mouthwash.  After brushing my teeth before applying makeup the last thing I needed was my lips becoming super red and clashing underneath my lip shade of choice.  After that, and the hassle of a next step in my oral regimen, I stopped using mouthwash.  Vanity…I know, but if you happen to be an artist you’d totally be able to relate.  So recently I tried this.

ORACARE_01

“OraCare Mouthrinse is a stabilized chlorine dioxide mouthrinse. Its alcohol-free formulation keeps the mouth’s natural moisture and provides a clean, fresh feeling without the painful burning sensation and sting. It is gentle enough for the mouth’s sensitive and delicate tissues so it can be used as often as needed.”

PRICE: 80ml PHP 57.20/ 250ml PHP 156.20

– Gets rid of bad bacteria that causes plaque build up, gum disease, and tooth decay

– Neutralizes volatile sulfur compounds–the true source of strong mouth odors.

When I first saw billboards of this I thought the taste would be awful, couldn’t imagine it otherwise.  As it turns out, it isn’t awful, in fact it’s hardly anything, it’s like water with a jab of refreshing peppermint that doesn’t get your lips red.  It’s like light peppermint water BUT with a lasting effect.  Sometimes people confuse strong sting for what combats bad breath but what’s more effective is a compound that can neutralize sulfuric odor compounds in the mouth.  I also use this to rinse off and disinfect my retainer for my teeth which I wear to sleep at night.  It’s a very light neutral taste but once you’ve rinsed with this any acidic foodie film or presence in your mouth tastes like it’s completely gone, especially if you’ve properly brushed your teeth beforehand.  If you’re one of those people who relies ONLY on mouthwash for a clean mouth please leave this page now LOL, you stink.  I do want a mouthrinse that regularly doesn’t turn my lips red and Oracare does the job nicely.… To full post & COMMENTS...

Tipco 100% Purple Carrot & Mixed Fruit Juice | Tastes Like a Jamba Secret

There’s a not so secret secret that a lot of the youth locally know already, that Jamba Juice has something off the menu that you can ask for.  I’m talking about the ever yummy Red Gummi shake, reminiscent of gummi bears and everything beary fruity good.  My brother and i made a discovery just yesterday. We discovered a juice that tastes just like it.

image

Tipco juice is made of 3 parts of mixed fruit or vegetable juice.  My brother agrees with me on the fact that Tipco’s Purple Carrot & Mixed Fruit variant nails the Red Gummi flavor we’ve been missing from Jamba…especially when chilled.  It’s veggie juice without the savory yuck factor some people can’t stand (I can, I love v8) and even my triathlete aunt, Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, drinks this juice and my cousins, her tri-athlete kids, love it.  It’s naturally fruity sweet with NO added sugar, artificial colors or preservatives.  We got this box and other variants for around Php80++ each at Iloilo Supermarket.… To full post & COMMENTS...

THE Elizabeth Arden Speaks on Proper Posture – 1932 Pathe Archived Video

Most of you know of her and you know the cosmetic range that bears her name.

Watch and hear this ancient video of Elizabeth Arden herself speaking on the eradication of old 1890’s Victorian style posture and the renaissance of posture in the new century with the support of proper exercise.  What a gem of a video and I couldn’t help but giggle at the way these women were exercising on the beach, but in fairness I do want to get my splits and handstands back eventually.  Temptation Island, anyone?

Blog Breakaway – Breakfast <3 Have it, You’ve Got Time

Have a good morning, and really have it!  Don’t let worries or the mad morning rush steal the day away.  Remember what Mr. Incredible always says (which is the opposite of what a lot of us say)  “I’ve got time” and because he believes, he always does.  The day begins with prayer, exercise even if it’s just a 10 or 15 minute routine, a refreshing bath, and breakfast!

Clockwise: Holly’s Lightly Salted (Farm Churned) Butter, Holly’s Really Farm Fresh Milk (Chocolate), Ripe Mango, Buttered Toast, and Red Grapes (sketch filtered with Camera 360 app)

After I did my morning stretch at 630am  and this Body Bangin’ 30 min Pilates routine till 715am I showered and went down to have breakfast.  I’m blessed to have a Mom who goes the distance and out of her way to get us good food.  She knows many preservative-free foods have a shorter shelf life but in exchange they extend ours.  As often as we can, we get Holly’s Fresh Milk and their butter made from the same milk (which actually costs less than the Nestle milk in groceries).  The family that owns the business are also the owners of Carmen’s Best Ice Cream, a small home business venture made from the same fresh dairy products that come from the Holly cows (Holly cows! LOL!!!).  This ice cream BEATS Ben & Jerry’s (seriously, it does, B&J is too sickeningly sweet) and for me is the best ice cream I’ve tasted locally EVARRRHHH.  Oh, by the way, this next photo of the ice cream I took over a month ago now, just to be clear I DID NOT have ice cream after breakfast, hahaha, okay?  I sprinkled their Malted Milk flavor (which has Malteser bits in it) with Milo on top :).  Malt meets malt, my classy touch.

“Taste the difference. Our homemade mix sets us apart from all other ice cream brands. We proudly create our ice cream using fresh milk and cream from our very own dairy farm, Real Fresh Dairy Farms, Inc.Best selling flavors: salted caramel, coffee, butter pecan, and malted milk.Butter Pecan, Malted Milk, Salted Caramel, and Brazilian Coffee. We have a flavor of the month, we can make custom ice cream, and we can substitute pure cane sugar with coco sugar for those with health or weight issues.”  Holly’s Dairy Products are also available at the same location.
