The Oscars 2014 Red Carpet Raves | Five Beautiful Faces and Proper Makeup

Lots of people just got their Oscars tube fix in the last couple of hours.  Ellen was funny, JLaw fell again, before getting to the red carpet, the stars took an epic selfie, and I knew Matthew McConaughey would bring home Best Actor.

Along with that, we beauty bugs always only pretty much await a certain segment of the whole event that isn’t even part of the main program, of course, the red carpet arrivals.  It’s where we finally get to see our beloved stars in an open space from top to toe in full swag.  It’s also where these actors get their faces mercilessly peppered with flash photography while the sun is setting.  Red carpet makeup is a professional makeup artist’s ultimate challenge because today with social media and smartphones, not one mistake stands a chance.    Read more to see the photos and find out who were the 5 actresses I thought had the best overall hair and makeup.

My Valentine Edit | II. The Smoldering Night Out

Smoldering night out…which is funny because I’m not going anywhere tonight, haha haha…Hardy Har Hut.  Anyway, as late as this post is I am thrilled to present to you the look I’ve labored on for the afternoon which no one else will really see, which is why you seriously have to look at me right now.   You’re all probably like “This was useful information…yesterday” we’ve been coming home late because of my brother’s school drama play nights.  I told myself if I’m going to spend Valentine’s at home shooting this feature I might as well go for showstopping, not quite as heavy but pretty much in the same gear as the look I did on myself for the Star Magic Ball last year.  By the way I was thinking of doing a red lip…but in reality while I love doing red every once in awhile (in unique tones that suit me) I really don’t for Valentine’s Day.  Some people go heavy with lips, I go heavy with eyes.

Salon Perfect Glamorous Demi Wispies false eyelashes (from Purebeauty, they’re much cheaper in US drugstores). I reused this pair, cleaned it off after one use and had them tucked away for a day like today…and I’m not going anywhere.

MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Liquid Foundation, N117 mixed with a drop of N153, buffed over the face with an ELF Studio Flat Top brush.

Bobbi Brown Touch Up Stick (Concealer) in Sand  – Heavy coverage concealer that’s perfect for spot concealing and okay to use under the eyes as well.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Super Matte Loose Powder – I swear by this as the best retouch setting powder on shoots, I was retouching a pair of lead talents overnight repeatedly with this stuff and it did not cake and made them look fresh on camera.

REVLON Photoready Matte Bronzer – You’ve heard me rave about this twice already.  It’s matte, it’s  versatile, and longwearing.

ELLANA Pressed Blush duo in Kitten /Peach Passion (buy here 5% off)  -  I used the pink shade for the day look, now the peach shade for a night out…in theory.

Fanny Serrano Custom Quad Palette – This is actually a sneak peek of a major find, I’ll say no more for now, used the lightest shade in the center of the lid *smirk*

Fanny Serrano Single Eyeshadow in “Diamond Champagne” – This is the main color on my eyes, buttery metallic gorgeousness, with moderate fallout, but this color is worth it.  It’s a metallic taupe with a violet undertone.

Max Factor Masterpiece Colour Precision Cream Eyeshadow in “Coffee”- I used this as a base beneath the eyeshadow, makes a great lid primer.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Black Waterproof Cream Shadow/Liner – For me this is THE potted liner that tops any gel eyeliner, it comes with a plug under the lid.  It’s more expensive because it’s not a gel eyeliner, it can be used the same way but it’s also a black cream eyeshadow that can act as a base.

MAC Riri Veluxe Brow Liner Pencil in Deep Brunette – I used this also in the day look, any brow liner in a great color that comes with a spoolie brush wins.

Benefit Bad Gal Waterproof Mascara – What you get is Amplified, volumized lashes as black as night, and the curl stays.

Smashbox “Always Sharp” Waterproof Kohl Liner in “Bare” – I don’t have big eyes so this helps open them up a bit more when applied on the waterline.

MAKEUP FACTORY Lipliner in #80 – This looks like a possible dupe for Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat pencil in Pillow Talk, it looks practically the same in my opinion.

Bobbi Brown Lipstick in “Baby Pink” -  For me this is my current perfect pink-beige lipstick, it glides on creamy, not greasy.

Bobbi Brown Lipgloss in “Pink Sugar” #9 – I like wearing this also on bare lips but tonight I applied this in the center of the lip on top of the lipstick.  It’s got a bit of stickiness but just the right kind of cling.

Bobbi Brown Nude Glow Shimmer Brick -  Used just a hint of this instead of blush since it’s also got a pink beige undertone, adds a bit of sophisticated glow.

Bridal Beauty, A Rare Chronicle |Two Days, Two People #LexandYelle 2014

It’s not everyday that I get to do makeup for a friend, one of my best and happiest friends from U.P. Fine Arts in fact.  Marielle Nadal or “Yelle” as we fondly call her (current crafty head of CraftMNL), uniquely planned out a two-day wedding with her husband, Alexander “Lex” Reyes.  Both are extremely well read and soundly creative, passionately prayerful, faithful, bound by wanderlust, and deeply sentimental.  They see the good and potential in nearly every person or situation and work relentlessly with the best of their talents to make the world a better, happier place.  They quite often burn the candle at both ends to get the job done perfectly so you can just imagine the beautiful outcome of their union. Yelle was one of the original founders of graphic advocacy hub Ideals PH, and when she met Lex, an Atenean project spearhead sort and graphic designer, he was involved in educational outreach camps for children.  The first actual day of their marriage was an intimate one in a church with the official Catholic rites and minimal trimming…

Yelle’s crafted bouquet made of cuttings of tweed and woven fabric, crocheted leaves and petals, some pre-made embroidered flowers and twine wrapped stems.  Made by the bride herself for both blessed days.

…and the second was an outdoor renewal of vows where they could invite friends and extended family.  I was completely touched to be handpicked by Yelle as bridesmaid and makeup artist to her personally so I thought I’d share with you glimpses of my fun-filled duo of wedding days.  Read more (Click “more”) to see more photos and even a before and after of the bride. :)

Early Christmas Gift from Lisa Eldridge | Being chosen is the best gift of all…

I woke up with my eyes still stuck together.  They burst open when I peeked at celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge’s post on her website announcing her My Lisa Look contest winners and saw my face, my actual face, posted on there!!  I won 3rd place in her My Lisa Look global IG contest (here at this link)! And she even described what she thought of my look and why she chose it! *Thud*

mylisalook_02

“Third place goes to Julia, who was inspired by my ‘Baby Bardot Fresh Spring Makeup‘  The finished look is just so fresh and suits her face and personality so well – of course I dont actually know her but I can sort of feel her personality through the sparkle in her eyes in the picture … if you know what I mean. Well done Julia, I love your make-up!” – LISA ELDRIDGE

mylisalook_01One girl from her team just emailed me a few minutes ago asking for my details so they could send out my prize by New Year.  I brightened the photo up for you guys, it won without me doing so but I wanted it brighter for the blog.  I really, really don’t care as much about the prize as much as the fact that Lisa actually looked at my artistry and approved and thought she saw “sparkle” in me.  Lisa looked at me and she actually liked what she saw.  That made me sparkle more today :D.  It’s like the best God-given early Christmas gift.  I can’t imagine asking for more this year.

MakeUp That Matters Differently | MIMI Foundation’s “If Only For a Second” Video

I always liked to believe that makeup, despite the notion of petty shallowness that surrounds it, is a tool for ministry.  Makeup can be brought forward in many more meaningful ways.  It is a medium that weaves all sorts of good magic in its own way.  Watch the video by the MIMI Foundation in a project entitled “If Only For a Second” here via this link  or  watch it embedded below.  The MIMI Foundation is a French cancer and well-being group.  Twenty cancer patients with eyes with their eyes closed make their way into one studio only to reap a moment that will strongly impact their lives.  Thank you, Mom, for sharing.

“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.” – KEVYN AUCOIN, America’s legendary MUA, 1962-2002
