Spiked by a slightly icy spring breeze when I walked those perfectly imperfect streets with cop car sirens blaring in the distance there was a sense of the Big Apple being mine for the moment for some reason (duh, Julia it was your birthday week lol) and I can’t quite put my finger on why but it’s an amazing gutsy feeling…it’s like something about New York hits you without warning just as soon as you get there. So does this sweet, musky, and spicy scent inspired by the city that never sleeps. DKNY have since my return released a fragrance entitled My New York or MYNY. I think any person who enjoys NY in general will agree that to name a perfume this way fits the experience for one in the city. New York in itself is without a doubt tailor-fit and not to mention zoned for the inspired individual, and it isn’t a city for the faint of heart. The bottle is heart-shaped glass topped by a lid meant to resemble a cityscape. By the way, shooting the perfume in the daytime didn’t seem to fit my memory of New York because truth be told I really hardly slept, haha. MYNY by DKNY is a warm, sweet, faintly fruity and musky scent that isn’t subtle but I can already tell it’s the sort of intense scent that can certainly grow on you as it lingers softly towards the end of the day. Expect to glow with a sensual sort of sweetness as time passes.
“The new fragrance DKNY MY NY was developed by Trudi Loren in collaboration with IFF. Top notes of the composition provide a blend of raspberry, pink pepper and galbanum, followed by Egyptian jasmine, freesia and orris in the heart. The base encompasses patchouli Heart LMR, vanilla absolute, musk and ambergris.”
MAIN ACCORDS: sweet, patchouli, musky, fruity, soft spicy
- DKNY MYNY 50ml (P3,650)
- DKNY MYNY 100ml (P4,650)
Available at Rustans Makati and Rustans Shangrila.
It feels like I blinked and just like that half a year has passed since I landed in New York City for the first time last spring in April. Eleven days there slipped like sand through a sieve and then suddenly the credits rolled like the back end of an indie film. That’s as close as I can get to describing my stay in NYC it was just too brief for words but every moment remains joyfully vivid. My wonderful trip to NYC wasn’t without its share of unplanned stuff at the front when I arrived and a bit of misadventure (I didn’t get to mark off half of my sights-to-see checklist, boo) but God was faithful to round off the whole rollercoaster-ish trip with cherry blossoms and special bonding moments with my cousin and friends that I never would have had otherwise. Suffice it to say He’s like totally mysterious like that in the way He allows things to come together.
Every moment high or low colored the trip as a memorable adventure for me and I still want to go back primarily for work in the future. I wouldn’t be completely honest if I didn’t say that I now understand why people go on and on about New York even if they haven’t returned in years. Just 3 days in when I arrived and though jet-lagged I was already smitten by my surroundings, Duane Reade (duh lol), and the thrill of possibility that hung at every street corner regardless of my sleeplessness. … Read the rest
I finished my Miss Dior Eau de Toilette a couple of weeks before I left for the US last April. It hadn’t occurred to me while I was there to shop for a new signature fragrance that wasn’t too far off from the properly done floral elegance of Miss Dior. I like floral fragrances but only if they are formulated in an especially unique way that doesn’t smell annoying and invites people to hang around you :). Up ’til the launch of Beauty Scents PH outlet store in Paseo Center, Laguna I had not smelt the simple joy that is Elie Saab’s Le Parfum scent. As proven to me while at a private bloggers’ dinner last night there is something warmly well-received about this fragrance. A handful of them who weren’t aware asked me what I was wearing and so did the event guest of honor, was flattered. The brand owner even mentioned she’s not a perfume person but she wanted to know what I was wearing. It’s one of those woodsy florals that’s done right, and the subtle inclusion of honey in the fragrance I think helps round off the scent tagging it as Mediterranean inspired. To me, mentally it smells like the memory of a beautifully calm person with infectious joy. I owe my prized scent selection to a tip-off.

Before I spied Elie Saab at the Beauty Scents PH (Paseo Center, Sta. Rosa, Laguna) launch last week after a tip-off. At Beauty Scents they sell select fragrance brands individually and by gift sets at nearly half-price, they also sell some cosmetics. I was admiring another beautiful scent across the room (Dior’s J’ adore) but the bottle’s appearance wasn’t my type. Then a kind person pointed me in the direction of Elie Saab which according to her was sort of in the same fragrance vein as J’adore, but younger smelling and packaged better. She claimed that she smelt it already and while nice it wasn’t quite for her. When she saw me on the hunt her memory of the fragrance matched my appearance she said. One spritz from the test atomizer and I was convinced.
This is the original Elie Saab Eau de Parfum debut release which launched in 2011. As bloggers we were allowed to choose a full-size fragrance to review, this is what I chose. When I wore this last night at that blogger event I mentioned it was the first time more than 3 or 4 people asked what fragrance I had on in one night, which was a good sign. They all affirmed it hung around nicely and wasn’t the nauseating sort of perfume. I managed to get the travel spray version of the same fragrance as well for easy application from my handbag while on the go. If you’re one of those girls who leans towards the woodsy, warm, floral category of scents and at your age (late 20s-mid 30s I’d say) now sort of have the feeling you’re past “eau de toilette” mildness this beautiful, appealing fragrance by Elie Saab in Eau de Parfum form is an excellent one to try. … Read the rest
This is sort of a different mix, today is beauty blogging with a swirl of what’s personal in it. Many of you know it’s been a rough couple of weeks for me since we got home from hospital with Dad. While I haven’t been able to set my mind on certain things like makeup and cosmetics for anything other than work lately there are still a couple of beauty bits I won’t be without now simply because they’ve just basically been helping me feel better throughout all this. This post has to be one for the books in the sense that at a time when the last thing I wanted to think about was “stuff” this stuff just had to be around because they just worked period. Thankfully now we’ve hired a temporary nurse for Dad so that eases lots of the tension in the daily to-do area. Today, I did want to share about the products that bring me temporal comfort right now and sort of…cushion the scenario if you will. These are simple comforts that function as a sort of outer balm for my inner well-being. That’s what a bit of beauty or wellness loot can sort of help to achieve, right? Especially if they really excellently do what they’re supposed to. So straightaway now, here are my current feel-good picks.
1.) Burt’s Bees Fabulously Fresh Peppermint & Rosemary Body Wash (available at Beauty Bar)
I was having one of those teary-eyed low moments in the shower from stress (we girls get that when things are tough, right, no shame in it at all) and decided to try something different to change it up. I pulled this from my new Burt’s Bees arrivals and brought it with me to my Tita’s house when I slept over and to my surprise when I lathered it up in the shower the minty aromatherapy-ish scent filled the bathroom and GET THIS, GIRLS, I actually SMILED, I kid you not, the freakin’ bath gel made me smile upon catching the first whiff. Then I caught myself and stopped and looked at the bottle for details coz I thought it was like a Twilight Zone moment, you know, being in tears but then suddenly smiling by yourself in the shower LOL. Good job, Burt’s Bees, you can be sure I’m getting the full size of this, I hadn’t had a moment with a bath gel like that ever.
Yesterday’s morning walk…
2.) G Stuff “Touch of Awakening” Eucalyptus Rosemary and Thyme Massage Oil (Php500+ for 250ml)
Next to prayer there’s nothing that relieves anything faster than touch therapy. Seriously speaking, I don’t know how many bottles of this G stuff we’ve already consumed as a family for massages. The smell of Eucalyptus and Rosemary transports you from the bad to the good in just a few minutes. This is hands down (literally) my favorite massage oil because it doesn’t sit on top of the skin and after you actually feel soft instead of greasy! Like you know how sometimes after a massage you want to take a shower because of the oily feeling? It’s the opposite situation with this, I actually have a complete shower and scrub prior to the massage and after the massage I just go over myself with a dry towel and I feel super baby soft and put my clothes back on. One cousin of mine when she was abroad consumed a whole bottle which we gave her like super quick because it kept dry skin away better than any other cream or lotion she had with her. According to her it was working so well that when she ran out she fell into a bad mood lol! … Read the rest
A late posted revelation but I did realize this a couple of weeks back. You know how lots of us have been wishing Benefit Bathina’s sultry yet demure, fragrantly pheromone-ish fragrance could be bottled as an actual fragrance? Benefit came close with the body oil but what’s funny is…I’m hoping my nose is as sharp as I think it is coz it seems Clinique with their modern scent Calyx has done just that. I sprayed Calyx on my left wrist and Benefit’s Bathina oil on my wrist and the Calyx didn’t smell all too different to me. If ever there is a subtle difference it would be that Calyx has a slightly (and I say slightly) sharper and significantly more floral note and Bathina has a milder, milkier floral note.
Given the very subtle difference it makes a lot of sense if you decide to lightly layer Calyx over Benefit’s Bathina Body Oil. The combination results in an irresistibly alluring modern day scent for the slow transition from summer to the ‘Ber months. Try and test my thoughts and tell me if you agree :).… Read the rest
