Reblogged – Beauty, the Golden Ratio, & the Marquardt Mask

I was drawn like lightning just a few moments ago to Michelle Phan’s FB plug on her post about the Golden Ratio of Beauty, not because I was desperate to find out what the Golden Ratio was (we’re deeper than that, right, Marianas Trench) but because for history’s sake and human reasoning I wanted to hear her thoughts on the matter.  The “Golden Ratio” she mentions refers to beauty being measured mathematically in reference to Phi, in this reference she posted it is visually shown using a geometric mask patented by Dr. Stephen R. Marquardt in 2001.  Dr. Marquardt, a retired surgeon who was also once Chief of Facial Imaging in UCLA, now focuses on research in human attractiveness in California and remains an active member of the Societies of Maxillofacial Surgeons.  Here is what Marquardt’s  patented mathematical mask looks like applied to a photo of Angelina Jolie’s face.

Michelle Phan blogs according to research as defined by the Marquardt mask:

“In terms of facial beauty, here are the ratios that define “perfect beauty”:

  • The ratio of the length of the face to its width is approximately 1.6. That means that the face is about 1.5 times longer than it is wide.

  • The face is then divided into three sections: hairline to right in between the eyes, from between the eyes to the bottom of the nose, and from the bottom of the nose to the very bottom of the chin. The lengths of each of these segments should be about equal.
  • Ear length should be equal to nose length, and the width of an eye should be equal to the distance between the eyes.” source link: http://www.michellephan.com/post/beauty-school-the-golden-ratio

In the corner of my heart I am originally a Michelle “PhanGirl” in spite of everything she isn’t or what people point her out to be, she got me started on beauty even before Lisa Eldridge even came into the picture for me.  In my opinion physical beauty, while being a great gift, is secondary to who you really are and how you help shape your world in the fullness of your purpose for the Lord.  Check out Michelle’s thoughts on the Golden Ratio here at her blog post.  Hold on a minute…whatcha doing with that ruler? LOL…

Unboxing My First SaladBox!

They’ve arrived!  Beauty sample box subscriptions have arrived on Philippine shores and the first to arrive at my blog’s doorstep is the 4-piece offering of SaladBox.  I actually received mine about 4-5 days ago, was just really busy over the weekend.

CLOCKWISE:

1.) Hot Shop Pour Femme – Happy/FULL SIZE– “Happy is a fragrance of joy, the essence of sunny, happy mornings.”

2.) NaturaCosmetics Gorgeous Argan Lip & Cheek Tint– “This dual-purpose wax-based stick gives an instant, lasting burst of color to your cheeks and lips.  Perfect for girls on the go.”

3.) Camaru Naturals Bamboo Charcoal Clarifying Soap/FULL SIZE – “Known to effectively clear out skin impurities, this popular VEGAN bamboo charcoal soap also whitens and moisturizes skin.”

4.) BC Fragrance Pillow Mist in Relaxing Mint – “Infuse your pillow with this relaxing mint scent and feel refreshed as you head off to dreamland.”

Now many of you might be expecting these new local subscription boxes to hold lots of famous brands, they may not have a lot at first but they will eventually and I’m glad that a lot of them, in spite of the lack of popular demand, are partnering with lesser-known local and regional (Asia) brands that are bringing forward lots of high quality products many of which are organic or vegan. Once I’ve tried all these I’ll do a stand-alone review on the product here that impresses me the most.

“For PhP500.00 per month, a subscriber will receive a box filled with four or more beauty and lifestyle product samples. The SaladBox team greatly values the money their subscribers spend so these products will have a value of more than PhP700.00. SaladBox is currently in partnership with a lot of beauty and lifestyle brands, both local and international, up-and-coming and timeless classics.”

To subscribe go to the SaladBox Website here.  Did you know that if you subscribe for a Saladbox and review any of the products you receive and submit your links/reviews to SaladBox you can earn SaladLeaves which are coupons you can use on the SaladBox site?  Right now what’s made the strongest first impression on me from this lot that’s arrived is the look of that Bamboo Charcoal Clarifying soap.  Bathtime will tell.

*SaladBox provided by brand for initial review

A No Make-Up Shake Up 1.1

Now, let’s see if I can get a trend going.  Quite a few have failed in the past and others are just disgustingly delayed (like the In Her Bag interviews, trying to secure another one after Donita). Weekly or perhaps monthly I shall try to post lovely photos sans the makeup of different faces in different places, young or old doesn’t matter.  First for this one is a photo that’s a decade old, I was 19 and with my aunts, Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan and Sharon Cuneta-Pangilinan, whose husbands are mom’s brothers.  Here is a photo my mom pulled out of a box today unretouched and very precious.

Whenever they’re with us they don’t wear makeup, most of the time not even cologne or fragrance, at the most maybe they’ve got moisturizer, mascara (hardly ever), and lip balm on.  They really only wear makeup when they’re working and up to this day, their faces are still flawless.  I’m even more “vanedosa” than they are and find myself having to tone my random fussy self down around them because of their up front simplicity. These two lovelies, in spite of what people preconceive about them from time to time, are not fussy bout skincare and makeup and not even beauty obsessed.  They’re more into God, the Bible, worship music, their husbands, lulling their children to sleep, books, the kitchen, and gadgets that help them through the day.  Like everyone under the sun, they’re not perfect and will never admit to being so and I love and am truly inspired by both of them.  May God’s love, protection, and grace shine upon them always.… To full post & COMMENTS...

ASOS Online Style & Beauty Retail – Free Global Shipping Both Ways No Minimum Spend

I’ve read ASOS being frequently mentioned by European beauty bloggers, including the Pixiwoo sisters, dear Charlotte (Lipglossiping) and my fave style blogger slash designer slash budding model, Anni Jurgenson aka Style HurricaneASOS is reportedly the UK’s largest online-only style and beauty retail store which hosts a vast list of brands inclusive of its own range of items.  If I’ve got my research right ASOS stands for “As Seen On Screen”.

ASOS.com is a global online fashion and beauty retailer and offers over 50,000 branded and own label product lines across womenswear, menswear, footwear, accessories, jewelry andbeauty. ASOS has websites targeting the UK, USA, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Australia and also ships to over 190 other countries from its central distribution centre in the UK.  Aimed at fashion forward 16-34 year olds, ASOS attracts over 13.6 million unique visitors a month and as at 30 September 2011 had 6.3 million registered users and 3.7 million active customers from 160 countries (defined as having shopped in the last 12 months).”

With the enormity of their online success ASOS has already gone and been global for quite a while now.  The “candy” that calls out to the “children” is not just the fashion forward finds with complete size ranges but free membership and also their free standard shipping both ways policy (yes, Philippines included).  For an additional cost, your purchase can arrive more speedily within as little as 4 days.  So ASOS, in comparison to StrawberryNET is super similar, it’s just that StrawberryNET is a purely beauty discount store.

Country, No. of working days to ship, standard shipping cost

If for example you don’t like what you get or receive the wrong thing the item is returnable and refundable within a minimum time period.  Sale periods also are not scarce on the website which makes them highly popular even among those who prefer their frequent dose of thrift.  In fact now they have an ongoing SALE on the site with lots of select items generously marked down.

If you scan thru ASOS’ fashion section, oh especially the yummy Petite category, you’re bound to “ooh” and “ahh” like I did over several pieces that hands down look like must-haves (with the ongoing sale some have been marked down as low as 8-10 GBP).  Read more to get to the full post and my personal picks under ASOS Beauty.
