MATTE LIPS MADE EASY BY MAYBELLINE

We’re doing a back to back lip post, I know.  I usually try not to do that for variety’s sake but I think these in color contrast are way different.  These Lip Gradation Sticks by Maybelline (Lip Studio Color Blur in U.S.) are by far the easiest, most comfortable matte bright lipsticks I’ve ever put on from the department store, and they’re not patchy.  I’m kind of late in discovering these, but that’s okay.

TOP DOWN: MAYBELLINE Lip Gradation in Mauve 1, Orange 1, and Fuschia 1, Php349.50 from local department stores.

They’re perhaps the next best thing to Colourpop Lippie Stix in form locally.  I spotted them at Maybelline’s Brooklyn Brow event yesterday.  Maybe the Maybelline team wondered why I was anything but focused on brows after I grabbed these testers from their table, haha.  Read on to see why I was distracted.

MAC VELVET TEDDY LIPSTICK

Note my epic fail when I approached the saleslady with too much excitement (an aunt of mine right then wanted me to choose makeup items for myself as a thank you gift) : “Do you have MAC SILK Teddy lipstick?” MAC lady sadly shakes her head “No, Ma’am, sorry.  We don’t carry Silk Teddy.” My face falls, still not realizing my mistake.  She does a mind scan, then “Ah, but Ma’am we have Velvet Teddy!”.  I slap my head and face palm “Yes, yes, yun pala…VELVET TEDDY, that’s what I meant.  Omy, you have it?  Yayyy”  To think I almost missed it.  I fondly blame Anna of Vivianna Does Makeup for enabling me to hunt this down.  Thankfully, I received it as a gift.

It was quite tough to source the “original” post that proved one of Kylie Jenner’s go-to lipstick shades was MAC Velvet Teddy coupled with Spice lipliner (yup, other than her lipliner only picks MAC Whirl and MAC Soar).  I didn’t even want to put her name in the title of this blog post in case I was wrong.  Read on to see me try it.

A TALE OF TWO REDS

I was in Kensington, London and Topshop was my last stop before our airport shuttle arrived.  I picked up Topshop Rio Rio lipstick from their matte range which is a Lady Danger-ish type of shade that isn’t as powdery and more red than orange…but yes, still, a classic coral. I knew Zoella liked it, but was unaware when I bought it that Alexa Chung had recommended it to Liv Tyler as well (as Alexa told ITG), and Liv completely followed suit on that shared tidbit.  There goes the neighborhood.

Excuse the “I’m holding my breath” face.  I should end this post right here, haha.  Of course, it would be not very nice to be raving about a lipstick shade that isn’t locally available.  I try not to do that or like today if I do, I  choose to refer a worthy dupe.  The dupe was so good I got confused while cropping photos after downloading the shots from my camera.  Read on.

MAC Riri Hearts “Heaux” Lipstick | A Redder Berry w/ Retro Matte Staying Power

Say hello to my second MAC lipstick purchase ever in my entire lifetime, yes, I currently only own two, the other is a Pro Longwear shade which I’ll review if I get it back from my friend (Hello, Krista).  Two others I have owned in the past were gifts, a Viva Glam from my godmother and “Amorous” an earthy berry  hand-me-down from mom.  It doesn’t matter that cranberry and ox-blood shades come off as stereotypical during the ‘Ber months…, no matter how stereotypical dark lipstick may be towards the end of the year women will still get those Tom Ford “Black Orchid” inspired shades.  This is nowhere as dark as “Black Orchid” but it swims in the same hue pool.  Megablogger Christine of Temptalia.com gave this one an A-, she likes that though like any other matte lipstick it can tend to get patchy at the end of the day it’s still a creamier, silkier texture than the other permanent retro mattes in MAC’s lippie dynasty.

Now, I didn’t look up the meaning of “Heaux” before I bought it, I naively thought it meant Hue (since it’s from a summer collection) and when I looked up the meaning now (just now, give me a gold medal), I cringed.  Lord, protect me, it means a number of things like hex (ugh…in JESUS’ name!), or someone else online said “heaux” (prostitute) but I’m not entirely sure if that’s accurate, it probably is.  I didn’t stop to think that the name might mean anything remotely dark because MAC Riri Hearts is a limited edition SUMMER collection for crying out loud.  I’d rather think about the third less harmful translation of Heaux which is “of or pertaining to a number system having 16 as its base”.  There…whew, seriously not kidding, had I known most likely I may not have gotten it.  To those who are thinking I’m overreacting, I’m not, things like that really matter to me.  I just really went for it after seeing via instagram what a lovely crimson berry it is.

I purchased this lipstick from the Instagram seller @maquillajeonlinestore for Php1100 (free shipping).  It would have arrived within a day or two if it weren’t for the Maring Monsoon, it got to me within about 5 days and that’s forgivable.  The lipstick looks a little more vampy when the sky is overcast or beneath white light.  During warm daylight it wears a bit more crimson, but you’ll notice when you apply the first layer that it has a strong magenta undertone, a plummy cranberry sort of fusion but I like that it still contains a lot of red so you can still consider it a rouge.  The texture is a true retro matte.  Matte lipsticks in humid countries can also tend to sometimes ball up in bits around the lip or get a bit more patchy.  Compared to Ruby Woo this one does it less, full wear after one meal shows little damage, just remember not to rub your napkin across your mouth and blot over the lips instead, then touch up a bit direct from the bullet.  Primary application of matte lipsticks is best with a lip brush, laying down an even stain first before adding the thicker 2nd layer to complete opaqueness.  Then seal the deal by a good strong blot with tissue.  Watch how Lisa Eldridge does a proper matte lip with MAC Ruby Woo here.

Hurraw! Earl Grey Tea Lip Balm | A Major Fave, Simple, Vegan & Cold Pressed

By far this has to be the best non-minty, handy lip balm I’ve ever EVER tried, as in…it’s uniquely yum and fragrant plus unlike petrolatum balms this is  actually good stuff for lips in a small, no fuss tube.  It delivers in a way that causes you to second glance it.  After putting it on I’ll bet you’ll be like “Wow, where’ve you been half my life?”.  Thanks to Rebecca and the team over at Cutieverse for bringing in the Hurraw lip balm range from the U.S. which is full of thoughtful flavors, currently not in retail but soon to be made available at Aura Athletica and Beyond Yoga branches.  On their website these retail for under $4.00 (Php170 approx.) I’m hoping the price hike isn’t too big once these pop out in local retail because my golly I’ll be repurchasing this if I can for a couple of years I already foretell.  Check out the U.S. HURRAW site showing the lots lovely flavors available here!

We all have to accept the fact that petrolatum lip balms only temporarily smooth and do not help or relieve dry chapped lips.  Like Caroline Hirons said, with petrolatum (Vaseline for example) lip balms you  keep repeatedly doing it over and over over the lips for anything to stay unchapped.  Makeup artists use Vaseline as a “lip lubricant” it’s a temporary fix for shooting purposes but it doesn’t really do anything for your lips.  This one does, and I super duper like it.

“Love tea? We do!
We added the soothing, distinctive and uplifting scent of cold pressed oil from Italian Bergamot oranges
to make our earl grey Balm heavenly. Quickly becoming a favorite amongst Hurrawers!
With green tea, chai spice, and earl grey to choose between you’ll be ‘loving tea’ all day long.

INGREDIENTS:

Sweet Almond Oil, Candelilla Wax, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Coco Seed Butter, Castor Seed Oil, Olive Fruit Oil, Bergamot Peel Oil, and Vitamin E  (premium organic, vegan, and raw ingredients). “Organic / Cold Pressed/ Wildcrafted”

This topped my favorite V&M Lip Balm a mint flavor which contained emu oil, that was lovely and chilling on the lips but I kept thinking about the emus and that one easily melted and made a mess.  Hurraw lip balms have a similar “instant comfort” effect after gliding smoothly over the lips, being super comforting and actually naturally nourishing and sinking into the skin surface with natural oils without the minty sensation (although Hurraw does have a Mint variant locally blogged by Kira of Kira-Ramirez.com). I almost requested for a handful of the fruity flavors (which I’m sure rock as well) but THIS…this Earl Grey Tea lip balm flavor infused with other teas and Italian Bergamot orange…OH MYGAWRSH…

What the Hurraw Staff Have to Say:

“Super smooth, not draggy, not sticky, not sweet, not too glossy, not too smelly, never grainy, long lasting;
plus, it had to hold up to being in a back jeans pocket all day without melting! It took us several obsessed years to formulate Hurraw! Balm and put it through all the rigors.
We love it, use it, and hope you do too.

We individually pour each tube of Hurraw! Balm in our own facility.
The quality and integrity of our product is a top priority and we feel Hurraw! is the finest all natural, vegan, raw balm available…
a great product to be used by everyone regardless of lifestyle or eating habits.

By the way I shot this little lip balm at tea time in the 530pm afternoon sun just for a personal touch.  Corny much?  Just high-five me for the effort, lol.  If you’ve got an online store and would like to help spread Hurraw love locally and sell or purchase these please do and contact Rebecca Pilapil via this email: rebecca@cutieverse.com and check out the Cutieverse.com site.  These are seriously sooo good.… To full post & COMMENTS...
